Holy Vaccinations, Commissioner…They Found a Rabid Bat in Boise County!

Boise County (670 KBOI News) – If you’re squeamish, this next story might make your skin crawl…a person and a dog in Boise County are being treated for possible exposure to rabies after a bat found in a home tested positive.

Dr. Sarah Correll with the Central District Health Department says fortunately, these days treatment for rabies doesn’t involve shots to the stomach — it’s just a regular shot in the arm.

“It is important, though, if someone ever sleeps in a house where a bat may have entered the bedroom or was found in the bedroom, that the person seek treatment to get the rabies vaccines,” said Correll.  “Because they can be exposed during the night while they’re sleeping.”

Furthermore, she says bat teeth are so small, the marks they leave after a bite are gone in a couple of hours, so people often don’t know they’ve been bitten.

Correll says it’s important to capture any bat that might be in your home or cabin, so health officials can test it.

Good luck sleeping tonight!
