Nampa Approves Anti-Panhandling Signs

Nampa (670 KBOI News) – Panhandling is protected by the First Amendment, so says the United States Supreme Court, but that doesn’t mean Nampa leaders want to encourage it.

This week, the City Council approved $1,800 to build and install 10 signs encouraging people to not give money to panhandlers, but to non-profit groups that help the homeless, so says Mayor Debbie Kling.

“There are mechanisms to care for people with needs, whether it be the Foodbank, or shelters, or actually even jobs,” said Kling.  “Our unemployment is so low, there are opportunities for jobs.  What we want to do is encourage our citizens to support those that are helping people.”

Councilman Bruce Skaug referenced a survey which concluded 93% of panhandlers use the money they get to buy booze or drugs.
