Are The Olympics Losing Viewers?

Is it just me or does it feel like the popularity of the Olympic Games are on the downfall? Don’t just take my word for it though, Forbes.com shows that the prime time broadcast viewing from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro dropped from 25.8 million viewers to 15.1 million viewers in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

However, despite the recent loss of viewers for the Olympics, I don’t think the athletes that are involved are receiving enough recognition for what they do. Just imagine, the whole world is watching you, the amount of pressure that is on your shoulders when you are the one who is responsible for bringing pride to your country on the international stage. You definitely need to be at the top of your game.

At the same time, who is honestly going to get worked up over a game of Ice Curling. I mean, who can’t laugh at that sport. Don’t get me wrong, I have deep respect for each of those athletes as I could not preform up to their standards at any of those events. Although, when watching Ice Curling you have to admit it looks a bit hokey. How does a certain sport even become qualified to be an Olympic competition?

All jokes aside, here are some stats about the Olympics that you might find interesting.

Athlete With Most Olympics Medals Won: Michael Phelps – 28

Country With Most Olympic Medals Won: United States – 2,632 *Currently

Largest TV Audience: London 2012 Olympic Games – 217 Million
